When the adrenal medulla fires, it increases the heart rate, boosts blood flow to the muscles, and creates a surge of glucose (blood sugar) in the bloodstream. This mechanism evolved so we could draw from a quick burst of energy in a fight- or- flight situation. What is adrenal fatigue? Adrenal fatigue results when dietary and lifestyle choices cause the adrenal glands to exhaust after firing over and over. Our hunter- gatherer ancestors didn’t fatigue his adrenal glands because they only needed a burst of stress hormones during the occasional flight- or- fight situation. When we face chronic stress, however, it means that our adrenal glands fire constantly. This depletes the adrenal glands and compromises their ability to perform their tasks, like the controlled secretion of corticosteroid hormones. This leads to chronic fatigue, an impaired immune system, inflammation, and the other symptoms of adrenal fatigue. There are numerous situations that frequently precede adrenal fatigue. Here are some common causes, according to Dr. James Wilson, author of Adrenal Fatigue: The 2. Century Syndrome: Sudden life change, such as a move or loss of a job. Severe emotional trauma. Single parenting. College life. Drug or alcohol abuse. All work, little play. Perfectionist mentality towards life or work. Another type of chronic stress that contributes to adrenal fatigue is blood sugar problems. When we eat imbalanced meals, high in carbs and low in fat, it causes first hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and then hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). In response to the dangerous blood sugar crash, the adrenal glands kick in with stress hormones to mobilize glucose and raise blood sugar. The problem is that the adrenals aren’t meant to be drawn on for daily blood sugar regulation. They are only supposed to fill that role very occasionally. When it happens on a regular basis, it drains the adrenals. How do I confirm adrenal fatigue? The symptoms of adrenal fatigue are non- specific, meaning they can relate to other health issues. So it’s difficult to diagnose adrenal fatigue with just symptoms. I believe one key indicator of adrenal fatigue is lifestyle choices and health history. Are you currently exhausted, although you used to be a busy bee? Have you always taken on more than you can handle, but now you are unable to keep up? Do you rely on caffeine to get through the day? While adopting an adrenal fatigue diet and lifestyle certainly won’t hurt if you don’t have adrenal fatigue, the way to confirm adrenal fatigue is a cortisol saliva test. All you have to do is spit in some vials, stick them in the freezer, and mail them to a lab. After processing, you’ll receive a chart that shows if your cortisol levels throughout the day are normal or wonky. You can request this test from a naturopath or natural health practitioner. Why it is important to address adrenal fatigue? Without good adrenal function, the body can’t properly regulate blood sugar. This perpetuates inflammation and weight issues. Without healthy adrenals, the thyroid takes a big hit. It is impossible to fix hypothyroidism without also correcting adrenal fatigue. Women, it’s vitally important to fix your adrenal fatigue before menopause. Healthy adrenal function can prevent most – if not all – of the unpleasant symptoms associated with menopause. Once adrenal fatigue corrected, you’ll feel like you have your mojo back. You will be able to wake up with energy and motivation, you’ll have your libido back and you’ll have the energy to get through your day. Natural Adrenal Fatigue Recovery. Three important factors work together to address adrenal fatigue: diet, supplements, and lifestyle. Of all three, the most important – and challenging – is lifestyle. Diet and supplements certainly improve adrenal fatigue, but you must make the lifestyle changes. The Adrenal Fatigue Recovery Diet. Start Primal. Since adequate sodium in the blood is essential for healthy blood pressure, we can experience dizziness when aldosterone levels drop. Most people with adrenal fatigue crave salt. This is not the time to practice intermittent fasting! Your body is unable to properly monitor salt and glucose levels in your blood, so you must provide those factors frequently. Meals should focus on vegetables, healthy fats. Fruit juices, refined sugars and grains should be avoided because they wreck havoc on your blood sugar. Mindfully consume fluids. Dietary dogma hounds us to drink 8- 1. This stresses a healthy persons metabolism but chronically compromises the metabolism of someone with adrenal fatigue. Too much fluid reduces thyroid function, which works hand in hand with the adrenal glands. Additionally, too much water further dilutes to imbalanced sodium in your blood, exacerbating dizziness. Follow the simple tips in my post Hydrate for Metabolic Health. Enjoy lots of good fats. Monounsaturated fats from avocado and unadulterated olive oil can also be enjoyed. Strictly limit nuts and seeds, because the fatty acid profile and anti- nutrients impair thyroid function and digestion. Avoid all plant oils, including canola oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, grapeseed oil, and hemp oil. He suggests aiming for about 2. Favor fresh fruits and starchy vegetables for carb intake. A low carb diet exacerbates adrenal fatigue. During my short stint on a low carb diet (yes, I did try it before I knew better!) my adrenal fatigue symptoms drastically intensified. Eliminate. Glandular treatment, the ingestion of small amounts of animal glands, is a traditional treatment practiced by ancient healers from across the globe. When it comes to glandulars, less is usually better and quality counts. I follow the dose recommendation on the bottle. Vitamin C. Experts widely recommend vitamin C for adrenal fatigue recovery. Ascorbic acid, the popular choice for vitamin C supplementation, is a synthetic compound usually made from GMO corn. It also kills the good bacteria in our digestive tract, so it is not a good option for the long term (read more). I use plant- sourced vitamin C, either these acerola powder or camu camu capsules. Pastured Beef, Chicken or Pork Liver – Gram for gram, pasture- raised liver is the most nutrient- dense food on the planet. It provides true vitamin A, an essential nutrient for adrenal fatigue recovery and hormone balance in general. I am extremely cautious of using hormones or pre- hormones for therapy because they can do much more harm than good, especially in the long- term. I am not disagreeing with their experience, but I had severe adrenal fatigue and dedicated myself to healing through diet and lifestyle, without the need for expensive and potentially harmful supplements. If you do look into the option of DHEA, progesterone or pregnenolone, seek the guidance of the most experienced professional you can find. Lifestyle Changes for Adrenal Fatigue Recovery. Sleep. You Must Stick to Your New Way of Life – Reverse the Food Psychologists! One of the marvelous things about the human body – not to mention the human psyche – is its ability to adapt. Over time, as you bypass those unhealthy foods that may have contributed to your disease in favor of healthy foods that help to reverse the condition, you will find yourself actually preferring the foods high in nutritional value. Practice this the next time you go shopping: only stick to the walls of your grocery store. This is where all the fruits, vegetables and fresh meats and whole- grain breads are. AVOID the center aisles, as this is where the processed foods are. Learn some food psychology, as grocery chains have spent millions of dollars on the best ways to get you to buy junk food – at eye level, using welcoming colors (and even scents), and at the checkout and the front of the store. Even the music is tested to see which is best to have you buy the most food. When you do have to go to the middle aisles, look on the higher and lower shelves . It’s okay to take a “break” once a week. But, for the most part, you will discover that both physically and mentally, your body will prefer to eat a healthy diet. Your Body and Tastes Will Adjust, and You Won’t Want to Go Back. As for myself, I also had a history of high blood pressure. My doctor said to cut down the salt. Impossible, I thought! For the first few weeks, I stuck with it, skipping the salt shaker, cutting down on salty foods, and beginning to look at how much sodium was in the processed food I bought (and trying to find low- sodium options). Luckily, I never really craved salt, but food was definitely more bland. I stuck to it, and sometimes substituted with hot sauce, being careful to choose sauces low in sodium. After a month, I decided to have a pepperoni stick ! That’s because my body had actually adjusted itself and I lost the taste for salt. I can no longer enjoy a lot of menu items at restaurants, knowing the massive amounts of sodium they add. I ask to “hold the salt” and most cooks are accommodating. Now, when I make soups and meals for family and friends, I tell them that they will have to add their own salt. I find that my soup tastes just right – others find that they need to add salt. My blood pressure is down to normal, and I feel a lot better. Same with the rest of my diet when I was first diagnosed with fatty liver disease. Two months after I began my diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean meat, I went to a restaurant and had a greasy burger (everybody slips.) I got a stomach ache afterwards (not to mention I drank a lot of water due to the salt content), and I found that I was actually craving vegetables. That evening, I ended up going to my local grocer for some fresh asparagus. I grilled it up, adding some olive oil and pepper, and ate them all. My body is literally addicted to vegetables! Your body will adjust, and you will feel a lot better. When you begin eating the right foods, you are taking a giant step toward your health. Home Remedies for Constipation - Treatment & Cure. What is Constipation? It is a common cause of painful defecation. Constipation, if severe, is known as obstipation where the individual is not able to pass stool or gas. In case of bowel obstruction, it is known as fecal impaction. Generally, constipation is result of either obstructed defecation or colonic slow transit. Obstructed defecation is due to mechanical and functional causes. On the other hand, colonic slow transit can be due to hormones, diet, heavy metal toxicity, side effects of medications, etc. In children, constipation usually occurs after starting formula or processed foods. Their stomach, at that stage, is not acquainted to digest processed foods, and therefore takes time to pass it through. This, however, subsides after a while when kid starts eating processed foods on a regular basis. Some kids can even experience constipation during their toilet training or soon after starting their school. However, there are no clear- cut guidelines to diagnose constipation, as every person has a different digestive system. But, usually, people who have bowel movements thrice or less than that per week are said to be constipated. Also, in this case, they face difficulty during defecation and always have a sensation of incomplete bowel evacuation. Causes of Constipation. Largely, causes of constipation can be divided into three categories primary, secondary, and congenital. The most common cause is primary and it is not life threatening. In this case, symptoms can be present for greater than six months with no medical explanation and no known organic cause. On the other hand, secondary constipation can be due to insufficient intake of fiber and fluid, decreased physical activity, hormonal imbalance, side effects of medications, obstruction by colorectal cancer, etc. Below are some of the causes of constipation. Diet Constipation can be caused due to insufficient intake of fiber in diet, low intake of liquid, or dieting. It is one of the major causes of constipation. Medication Certain medications show constipation as a side effects. Some of these categories are diuretics, antispasmodics, opiods, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, antacids, etc. Metabolic & Muscular Metabolic and endocrine problems may also lead to constipation. Some of these problems are hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, hypercalcemia, diabetes mellitus, and celiac disease. Symptoms of constipation are also very common in people with muscular and myotonic dystrophy. Structural, Functional Abnormalities Conditions like spinal cord lesions, colon cancer, Parkinson's, anal fissures, pelvic floor dysfunction, and proctitis can also cause constipation. Neurological Neurological conditions like anismus, descending perineum syndrome, and Hirschsprung's disease can also lead to chronic constipation or obstructed defecation. Psychological Some of the psychological causes of constipation can be voluntary withholding, fear of public restrooms, out- of- home settings, fear of pain, etc. Symptoms of Constipation. Some common symptoms of constipation are as under : Infrequency and Irregularity in Elimination of Fecal Matter It is one of the most common symptoms of constipation. People with constipation have to face hard time eliminating fecal matter. In addition to this, their bowel movements tend to be very infrequent and irregular. Foul Breath, Headache, Coated Tongue, Insomnia, etc. Because of accumulation of fecal material in stomach, one tends to have foul breath and coated tongue along with infrequent headaches. These symptoms make the individual uncomfortable, leading to insomnia, restlessness, dark circles, nausea, mouth ulcers, etc. Conditions like varicose veins, pain in lumbar region, fullness in abdomen, acidity, heartburn, etc. Its laxative properties make it an agent anti- constipation agent.
